Thank You, George & David, for a Serious Question about Schools
It took a while but we finally saw an actual debate among the candidates about American schools. David Yepsen of the Des Moines Register and George Stephanopoulos engineered it yesterday morning during the gathering of Democratic candidates on ABC.
Yepsen asked where the candidates stand on performance pay for teachers. That's a serious question on an issue we've been talking about since launching ED in 08 in April.
What followed was the closest thing we've seen to a real, honest discussion about education among the candidates. You could actually see different approaches and different positions start to emerge. Some candidates even felt the need to jump into the discussion without being called on, and some asked for more time to clarify their positions!
It was refreshing, and it was long overdue. Stephanopoulos noted as much when he said, "Let me turn now to an issue that hasn't been discussed enough in these debates so far, the issue of education."
We thank George Stephanopoulos and David Yepsen for getting the education debate started in earnest. Let's hope it continues. Here at ED in 08 we're going to do everything we can to make sure it does.
